What Does Communities in Schools of Laredo Do?

Keeping youth in school is not simply the role of teachers or the school—it is a community responsibility. Students drop out for a variety of reasons and there are usually signs that indicate a student’s disengagement—lowering grades, higher absentee rate, or unsettling behaviors. Communities In Schools (CIS) of Laredo, Inc. is a dropout prevention program funded by the TexasLegislature and administered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). CIS partners with educators, students, and parents to identify needs of students who are at-risk of dropping out of school. The CIS Model is designed to recognize these signs and provide integrated student support services and resources needed by students to reengage and stay in school. Once the needs are identified, CIS customizes supports for students and families and provides individual case management and schoolwide services, engaging the community as part of the process. This comprehensive model includes: effective program administration; trained professional staff on each campus; community resource coordination; holistic, case management for students and families with significant needs; and schoolwide activities aligned to campus goals.
